Of uncertain derivation; a hole in the ground (dug for obtaining or holding water or other purposes), i.e. A cistern or well; figuratively, an abyss (as a prison) -- well, pit.

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

And He said to them, "Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"

The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

She said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?

Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
