Probably strengthened from phthio (to pine or waste); properly, to shrivel or wither, i.e. To spoil (by any process) or (generally) to ruin (especially figuratively, by moral influences, to deprave) -- corrupt (self), defile, destroy.
KJV: If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
NASB: If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.
