Middle voice from a primary mao (to long for; through the idea of insensate craving); to rave as a "maniac" -- be beside self (mad).
KJV: And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?
NASB: Many of them were saying, "He has a demon and is insane. Why do you listen to Him?"
KJV: And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
NASB: They said to her, "You are out of your mind!" But she kept insisting that it was so. They kept saying, "It is his angel."
KJV: And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.
NASB: While Paul was saying this in his defense, Festus said in a loud voice, "Paul, you are out of your mind! Your great learning is driving you mad."
