From an unused root meaning to apportion, i.e. Bestow; a donation; euphemistically, tribute; specifically a sacrificial offering (usually bloodless and voluntary) -- gift, oblation, (meat) offering, present, sacrifice.
KJV: And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
NASB: So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground.
KJV: And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
