From an unused root meaning to cut down (trees); the trunk or stump of a tree (as felled or as planted) -- stem, stock.
KJV: Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
NASB: "Though its roots grow old in the ground And its stump dies in the dry soil,
KJV: And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
NASB: Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
KJV: Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.
NASB: Scarcely have they been planted, Scarcely have they been sown, Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, But He merely blows on them, and they wither, And the storm carries them away like stubble.
