Note: We are not Torah Keepers, nor are we Hebrew Roots. We believe the Moedim (7 Jewish Festivals) are excellent learning tools and point to the Lord Jesus Christ. We were told to follow Him and His Apostles.
The purpose of the Torah or Law (instruction) was to reveal sin. For example, the Torah in Exodus 20 says, "Do not Murder." This is a command. However, murder is the end result of lots of anger, bitterness, selfishness, envy, lying, dishonesty in the heart, jealousy, etc, which are HEART motives that can eventually cause us to act and MURDER SOMEONE. The Lord wants to reveal those sinful motives and disbelief in God's word BEFORE we act. Adam and Eve acted AFTER being deceived (EVE) and Adam (CHOSE) to sin. God wants us to "take every thought captive" before we end up sinning.
For example, there are 613 Hebrew Torah Laws. 247 cannot be kept today because:
a. There is no temple
b. We do not live in the land of Israel
c. These laws are divergent in their application requirements.
However, they do provide us with much beneficial instruction on the character of God, His will and how we are to act, and His expectations.
Jesus said FOLLOW ME, and we show Him we love Him if we keep HIS commandments, which He gave to His Apostles. NASB John 14:15 There are 1642 Greek Imperatives (commands) in the New Testament. NASB Acts 2:42
We are to walk after the Holy Spirit. Romans 8 shows how we should walk according to the Spirit, not the flesh.
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Disciples are to do God's will, which means we need to know the Word of God so we don't sin.
