Spiritual warfare Part 1 Can a Christian have a demon?

I am with Dylan Browning for a two-part series on Spiritual Warfare. Dylan also studies scripture to live a praiseworthy life to God with Biblestudycompany.com. Dylan came from a Pentecostal/charismatic background and encountered a man who believes Christians can have demons. He recently attended this man’s conference and came back with some questions on spiritual warfare. My challenge was this; let’s study what you currently know about this topic in the Bible, and then we can have a podcast. He eagerly decided on the bible study! After his research, we met several times to hone the podcast.

Here are some of our topics:

Can believers who are born again have a demon? What happens when the Holy Spirit comes into us? Are there generational curses, and what about “soul ties”? What is our role in spiritual warfare? Is spiritual warfare offensive (we go on the attack) or defensive in nature? Are humans three parts: body, soul, spirit, or two parts? When Christians pray about binding Satan, is this biblical? How and what do we pray for people when we encounter demons? Does repentance play a role in deliverance?

Join us for the podcast and these questions and lively discussion!

Yes, I watched it. I was explaining why I couldn’t help out with the YouTube algorithm by commenting on YouTube as you asked us to in the lesson. You can only like and comment on YouTube videos if you have an account, but you can watch the video there. Another thing I’m wandering if you can help with on this topic, regarding the Catholic exorcisms using non-scripturally based means and rituals or any unbiblical deliverance ministries . How does that fit in with Mark 3, specifically 3:22-26? “And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebub,” and, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.” So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end.” What do you think is happening related to these verses in exorcisms or what is termed deliverance ministries today? People really think and feel that they’re being delivered from demons, yet the practices aren’t true to scripture or in line with the Holy Spirit. I mean the Catholic Church has a huge platform for exorcising demons. How does that fit with the Mark 3? What’s happening if it’s not of God and satan isn’t casting out satan? What is happening spiritually for or to people who think they’ve been delivered through unbiblical practices?

I don’t have a youtube account, so can only comment here. Thanks for studying this out. I have wandered what “deliverance” is supposed to look like because of so much bizarreness on this topic. yet I know the Bible speaks of people convulsing and screaming out as demons are cast out. We also are told casting out demons is something His followers will do. That’s the one place I struggle to understand what the Bible really depicts, and how it should look. That’s where I struggle - sometimes it almost seems like demons are just kind of putting on a show with people. Roman Catholicism for example has a lot to say on this, but all wrapped up in unbiblical rituals like holy water, crucifix,….so clearly not Holy Spirit led. I don’t know what to look for regarding what the Bible describes. It seems like all they had to do was speak, but then there’s the incident where they couldn’t cast the demon out. They were told either that type of demon or the kind of faith required to cast it out (I’ve heard both interpretations) could only come from fasting and prayer. I appreciate the ideas about not needing anything but His Spirit to be delivered. Think the same as you do, just struggling to see how the above fits into anything scripturally accurate happening today. There’s so much strangeness and spectacle about it, but don’t see anything scriptural looking at the same time deliverance is discussed in scripture. Then, I’m further confused because it did seem to make a scene as described in the Bible at least at times as well. Also, if you could speak some to where is the conscience and how that plays out in the soul and spirit distinction. Just thinking on it as we know there’s no good apart from Him, and we need faith and His Spirit to do anything good. Yet, there is kindness and what looks like goodness in unsaved people. There’s what look like fruit of the spirit - patience, gentleness, self-control,… where does that goodness come from based on what you’ve discussed? I think it’s a conscience, but don’t see how that fits with the flesh, soul, spirit distinction given our dependence on the Holy Spirit to choose well in the soul. I’m trying to think back - think maybe I chose well out of fear, or desire to be connected to other people when not seeking His Spirit. But just seems like there’s goodness and kindness in people that doesn’t fit into what we understand. I know fear and self can completely overcome that, but so it can with believers. Just hard that people who seem genuinely kind, many kinder than me, patient, seeking good things, preferring right things,….self-denial doesn’t only happen in believers. How does that fit in with what we believe? That’s why I’m curious about how the conscience fits into this discussion.
